Things to do Before Google Activates its Data Cap

What You Need to Know

Starting on the 1st of June, Google will be taking into account your Google Photos files to unify it into your free 15GB storage that is given to all Google Account users. Saved photos before June 2021, will not be counted against new storage limits. However, Google Pixel owners will still have the privilege to upload high quality images without disrupting their storage limits. Other than that, Google will still remain to count any files and data from your Google Drive to the storage limit. After your storage limit is hit, Google will give a grace period of 24 months before deleting files to create more space. Here is what you can do before you hit full capacity.

What You Can Do

1. Clean up your account

You may identify which type of files are taking up the bulk of your storage and how much space you have left before you hit the limit. This will give you more insight onto what is taking up so much space and which files you may need to look into first. You can do so by clicking here or going into the google one website.

Once you are done, you may go to Google Drive’s help page to find out how you can delete the files you no longer want. You may start with sorting your files by size, so that you can delete your larger files first. You can also change your Google photos settings to save your photos from original quality to high quality. This will compress your photos and reduce storage space efficiently.

2. Migrate some data to another cloud or application

You can also start using another cloud service or another application that is free to use. Here are some options for you to explore.

  • OneDrive is a Microsoft cloud service which supports android, iOS, tablet and windows devices. It has an automatic backup for albums and customisable preferences for mobile. Preferences include video backup, using only wifi to upload your files and selecting media to backup. This service is free for the first 5 GB.
  • Dropbox is a cloud service that mainly ensures file security and encryption. It allows the file and data to be saved and seen in real time throughout different devices. Dropbox only gives 2GB worth of free space. However, you can gain additional 500MB for free if your recommended friend installs dropbox.
  • iCloud is a cloud service solely for Apple users. The software provides free 5GB worth of storage space. You can upgrade to 50GB at RM3.90 a month which is far cheaper than Google Photos.
  • Terabox a.k.a Dubox is the chinese version of Baidu Netdisk. It provides 1TB of free storage space. Functions include automatic backup for photos and videos, support offline downloading, syncing throughout multiple devices and the availability of sharing of documents through a link.

3. Pay to increase your storage limit

If you love using Google services including Google Photos and Google Drive, why not consider upgrading your own account? It only costs RM 8.99 per month for 100 GB or RM 7.08 per month if you pay for the entire year (RM84.99 per year).
