Fed-up, overworked and underpaid contractual doctors are putting their foot down as the Malaysian Government has failed to absorb them into getting a permanent placement. A total of 23,000 medical officers have been deprived of getting a permanent job after serving their compulsory housemanship since 2016.
This is a growing problem that will only multiply as more graduates enter the medical industry. A strike on July 1st has been organised by contract doctors who have had enough of this situation. The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) reassures that they are currently trying to resolve this matter with the current authorities and does not condone striking during a pandemic.
In the effort of protecting the interest of all contract doctors, the MMA has recently rejected a proposal that promoted structural inequality by the Malaysian Public Health Physicians’ Association (PPPKAM). The proposal was to allow more bumiputera medical graduates to get a permanent placement in the civil service. The Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) has since responded to their proposal below.
Further updates also show that the strike will not be carried out on July 1 as it will jeopardize helping those who are in need. Instead, opting to protest by holding a press conference, including sending out a memorandum to the SPA and an open letter to KKM and MMC. Petitions such as this one by Rashidah Mohd Rashid have gained over 75,000 signatures in order to bring awareness and create a better future for young contract doctors.
