Residents in Kuantan have claimed that the police have threatened to issue a RM50,000 fine if they did not lower the white flag. The white flag movement is in regard to the #benderaputih campaign where citizens in need will fly a white flag in their place of residence in order to receive help from other citizens.
The confrontation started with local residents and the village chief asking the residents to lower down the flag. When residents did not heed the request, the police were called in to settle the issue. Local residents also said that there wasn’t any law that states that they couldn’t fly the white flag. They also said that the police threatened a fine of RM50,000 if the issue becomes viral.
The Pahang police has since denied any allegation or threat that was made. The police chief, Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf clarified that the white flag was ordered to be taken down due to it being hung on an electric pole. The police have no issue with hanging up white flags as long as they do not obstruct any roads and are flown in a proper place.
