Introducing Whatsapp Channels: Officially Launched In Malaysia

Last month, WhatsApp launched the new WhatsApp Channel feature in Colombia and Singapore. Today, this feature is finally being officially announced and rolled out in Malaysia.

Step 1: Update WhatsApp to latest version and choose “Updates” below

Step 2: Click “Continue” to agree all the T&C

Step 3: Click “+” to select your interested channels

Step 4: You’ll receive the latest updates and contents from the selected channel

Their goal is to create the most private broadcast service possible, and they begin by safeguarding the personal information of both channel admins and followers. As a channel admin, your phone number and profile photo will be kept hidden from your followers. At the same time, when you choose to follow a channel, your phone number will not be disclosed to the admin or other followers. Channel respects that they can only view the names and profile pictures of their followers, without exposing their phone numbers. WhatsApp’s official stance is that they will store channel history on their servers for only 30 days. Administrators can also choose to block screenshots and forwarding of their channel’s content.

Lastly, the latest WhatsApp update includes a minor modification to the app’s layout. Users who have received the update will observe that the previous “Status” tab has now been transformed into the new “Updates” tab. This new tab combines both status updates from contacts and the channels users follow.
