Malaysian Health Minister Dr. Adham Baba has once again become the laughing stock of the nation. Whilst giving a speech in Universiti Putra Malaysia, the minister compared the Covid-19 pandemic to the ‘Spanish fly’, a popular sexual lubricant available in hot cherry, wild strawberry and zesty cola.
Now, we all know that he was actually referencing the Spanish flu, a pandemic that occurred in the early 1900s. And it’s not uncommon to have a slip of the tongue, something most can look past. But to repeat it (yes, he said it more than once) spells a level of ignorance that is unacceptable, especially coming from the leader of a nation’s health ministry.
Moreover, he made erroneous statements about the death tolls. He said that the ‘Spanish fly’ claimed 1 million lives when in reality, it wiped out 500 million people. Also, he claimed that the Covid-19 pandemic led to 2.8 million deaths worldwide, a grossly inaccurate statistic. According to the CDC, Covid-19 has actually claimed the lives of more than 4 million worldwide.
This is not his only media blunder. This comes at the heels of him announcing that he has spoken to 500 countries in an online meeting. Fact: Earth has 195 countries. If one were to say that his speeches are out of this world, one would not be wrong.
Well, for what he lacks in common sense and general knowledge, he makes up for in entertainment value. So someone please hand him a glass of warm water. If it can treat Covid-19 as he so proudly claimed, it can definitely be used to wash down his embarrassment.
