Students below the age of 17 will have to wait for their appointments to be vaccinated by the Covid-19 virus. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba has recently reported that research has shown that teenagers, aged 17 and below will have a higher risk of developing myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) and pericarditis (inflammation of tissue that forms the sac around the heart) after completing two doses or being fully immunised. Although this only happens rarely, the government has chosen to wait longer for more data to be collected and research to be done from the vaccine manufacturers.
Nearly 400,000 students are due to take their SPM and STPM examinations this year. Dr Adham has however confirmed that those taking STPM will begin their vaccinations this month. Schools will also begin to resume once all teachers and administrative staff have been fully vaccinated.
