Enjoy Free Ferry Rides for 6 Months in Penang

According to Infrastructure and Transport Committee Chairman Zairil Khir Johari, Malaysians will be able to enjoy free ferry rides from July 1 onwards. This means that the Penang State Government will subsidise and waive the fee for foot passengers using the ferry service for the second half of 2021. Furthermore, the Penang State Government has allocated around RM78,000 or 65,000 tickets a month in order to encourage usage of the ferry as well as to relieve some financial burden for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new passenger ferries are now able to take around 10 minutes to make each crossing as compared to the older ferries which took 20 minutes. Ferries make their usual crossing to and fro in Penang from Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal on the Island to Ferry Terminal Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim on the mainland. Each boat is able to fit 200 passengers, although this number would be reduced through social distancing practices.
